American Village is a national pioneering civic education center
consisting of 113 acres, featuring unique interactive living history

Shelby
Iron Works Park

The
old Shelby Iron Works, located in the community of Shelby, is hidden
among the vines and trees along the north side of county highway
42, just about a 1/4 mile west of the intersection with county highway
47. The site is marked by a solitary brick smokestack, the only
remains visible from the highway. The Historic Shelby Association
maintains a park on the site of the old company park. In 1989 they
discovered this was also the site of the 1860 rolling mill, the
first rolling mill in Alabama.
A museum, an antique sawmill, a gristmill, a blacksmith shop, and
a syrup house are located in the park. The syrup house is used during
the Fall Festival for cooking and bottling syrup made from sugar
cane grown by the Association. Currently all activity takes place
during the Spring and Fall Festivals, |

Vulcan Park
is home to the world's largest cast iron statue and features spectacular
panoramic views of Birmingham. Located atop Red Mountain, Vulcan
Park tells the story of Birmingham's past, present and promise
for the future.
Vulcan, the
Roman god of fire and forge, was originally built in 1904 and
has stood as a symbol of Birmingham for over 100 years. A 10-acre
urban green space surrounds the 56' high statue and observation
balcony that sits upon a 124' pedestal. Visitors to Vulcan Center
find interactive exhibits and displays that give insight into
the region's history and industrial growth.
Vulcan Park
is open 7 days a week from 7 am - 10 pm.
Vulcan Center
and Tower is open Monday - Saturday, 10 am - 6 pm and Sunday 1-6
pm. Evening hours for Vulcan Tower are daily from 6 -10 pm.

The Karl C.
Harrison Museum of George Washington collection focuses on art
and artifacts from the colonial period through 1865. The collection
contains paintings, letters, furniture, porcelain, glassware,
silver, jewelry, busts and more. Martha Washington’s prayer book
printed in New York in 1783, an original 1787 Samuel Vaughn sketch
of Mt. Vernon grounds, writing instruments and tools from George
Washington’s survey case and an original tintype depicting Robert
E. Lee in his uniform for the last time are just a few collection
highlights.
The oldest
item in the Museum is the handwritten will of Colonel Daniel Parke
dated 1710. His grandson Daniel Parke Custis married Martha Dandridge.
After his death she married George Washington. Other 18th century
treasures abound-from Martha's prayer book to the original sketch
of the landscaping planned for Mount Vernon in 1787.
